Wow, make my LJ profile page more ugly please. Was going to post a screenshot of how awful my profile page looks on my monitor--the words are running into each other!--but decided that would take too much effort and probably everyone is seeing the same thing, right? Or is it just my weird screen resolution on my widescreen laptop?

Anyway, I went to a video game concert last week! I am such a geek.

It was really good overall, although they played too many songs from "guy games" for my liking (Halo, Starcraft, Warcraft, some really crappy-looking snowboard game, etc.). But I was really surprised by how good the music was in some games that I'd seen played before but which I'd never closely listened to (like God of War and Metal Gear Solid). They hired out the Vancouver Symphony to perform the songs plus a cantata choir to sing all the operatic stuff (like "One Winged Angel" from Final Fantasy 7, which alone was worth coming to the show) so it wasn't a low-budget operation. There was also a piano soloist who played part of this Mario medley, including the fast part at the end (but not blindfolded), and a similarly insanely fast Tetris medley.

Oh, and there were some chances for audience members to win prizes by playing video games on stage, of course. One guy had the chance to win some ridiculously expensive arcade system with 5000 games on it. He had to beat the first stage of Space Invaders in two minutes...but instead of moving the spaceship with a controller, they gave him a t-shirt and tracked his movements using that. I felt really sorry for him--it looked super difficult. And they picked a really overweight guy so the t-shirt didn't even fit him. Anyway, there was also a pre-show Guitar Hero contest, and the winner of that got to try to win a prize pack by playing Guitar Hero on stage. It turned out to be a skinny 14 year old kid! When the emcee told him that he was going to play the song on Hard mode, the kid said he wanted Expert mode instead. Cocky! He was really good, but he fell just short of the amount of points he needed to win. I think the huge screen and the audience's off-beat clapping threw him off. But they gave him the prize anyway.

The concert was about $40 (4000 yen) including all the box office fees, so I think it was worth it. The guys who put the show together obviously put a lot of thought and effort and feeling into it. They didn't just throw a bunch of popular songs together and have done with it. I was really impressed when they played a gorgeous medley from Civilization IV, which isn't a particularly popular game, but which ended up being one of my favourite songs of the night. They also included a local band and some local DJs, which didn't turn out that well, but at least they tried. Anyway, if you get a chance check it out!  .

Heh, I actually copied and pasted this description of the concert from an email I sent to my friends. Yay for plagiarizing myself! Saves so much time.

Zzzz. Me go bed now.

I don't see words running into each other on your profile? It might be your laptop ^^;
