"Is it the age difference?" asked Yashiro, looking stricken.

"No," said Nase honestly. "You're only a year younger than me, and you don't look it."

"Then...?"

"Actually, you're much more mature than others your age," Nase went on, as if she weren't in the middle of breaking his heart. "You're Waya's age, but you cook and clean for yourself and don't sponge off your parents. Also, you have a high school education, unlike some people I could name."

Her voice softened. "When you moved away from home it was for all the right reasons. You're a pro, a good one, and you make enough to support yourself. You know exactly where your life is going."

"You aren't making any sense," he said. "If I'm so great, why do you want to break up with me?"

She sighed. "Because even though I'm older than you, I'm not there yet, and you are. I need to figure out my own life before I can share it with someone else. Should I keep trying to become a pro? Should I throw money into cram school? I don't know."

"So?" He sounded almost angry now. "You think I care if you become a pro or not? That stuff doesn't matter to me."

"I know. But it does to me."

And she kissed him gently on the cheek, as if to say goodbye.

Wow, I can FEEL your hate from here. Nifty.

I'm surprised you don't know a thing about them-- Nase I could understand, but Yashiro? Guy got a lot of chapters and I think his character, while not as developed as the others, would have been enough to at least write a fiction of some sort.

I was actually a bit taken aback that you wrote a semi-romance thing with them, cause guessing at your thinking I was expecting something along the lines of Nase watching Yashiro play or vice versa for the interaction. Definitely came across as forced only because it seemed more like you were shoving in as many "facts" about the two as possible, but hey, more writing from you is always a plus for me!

Most of my research time was spent trying to figure out their ages, stupidly enough. It was just one of those things I had to know. I knew Yashiro is one year older than Hikaru (Waya's year mate), but I wasn't sure about Nase. I read her profile in the Gorgeous Character Guide but it didn't have her age there. She seems to be older than Waya though. Eventually I figured she's probably one year older than Waya & Yashiro since she's still in the insei program at the end of the manga. Hikaru would have been in his first year of high school at the time if he weren't a pro. Nase's birthday is in May so for her to be an insei she has to be a third year student in high school or younger. I'M AN IDIOT ABOUT RESEARCH, I KNOW.

Yes, I agree the ficlet was forced. I am thinking of totally revamping it! Might still make it semi-romantic though, since I've already been thinking in that direction.

Ah, I could see the confusion-- keep forgetting that the slash meant pairing in fanfic. world. I wrote "any subject/interaction" as means of conveying that I didn't care what you wrote about in terms of content, just that it was about the two interacting in some shape. That's my bad.

I actually think Nase is an interesting character only because she's the only female insei and I thought that there was more to be done with that, but alas.

I'm holding my breath in anticipation.
