Summary: Isumi runs into Waya a few weeks after the pro exam. They have angst. Or Isumi thinks they do.
Isumi is Not a Go Pro, But He is an Angst Pro
Isumi met Waya’s eyes, shocked. He’d managed to avoid everyone from the Go Institute for weeks, and now he just had to run into his friend, in front of the barber shop of all places.
“Hey,” Waya said, fidgeting and looking away. “Funny meeting you here. I didn't know this was your barber too.”
“Yeah. Um, nice haircut.” Isumi sounded stupid even to himself. “Mr. Sato did a good job.”
“Actually, Akemi-san did it. I find she does a better job with the younger styles.”
“Oh, really? I didn’t know that.”
They paused awkwardly.
“Listen, Isumi-san...” Waya ran a hand through his bangs, and bits of fresh-cut hair fluttered onto his shoulders. “I’ve been wanting to say this to you for a long time.”
Isumi felt something tighten in his chest at those words. Ever since Waya had passed the pro exam, things had been...tense between them. But maybe they could patch things up here, somehow. He hoped so.
“What it is, is,” Waya began, “I just want to say...don’t take this the wrong way or anything...”
“It’s okay,” Isumi interjected, feeling a sudden rush of affection for his friend, who was usually never this hesitant about anything. “You can say anything to me.”
Waya gave him a grateful look. “Really? Okay. I’ve always wanted to tell you that maybe you should try doing your hair a bit differently. I mean, it's gotten better since you stopped doing the bangs parted in the middle thing quite so much, but you can still maybe work on making it less...round? That's not in style anymore. Even Shindou says your bangs could use some work, and...well, actually, he has his hair parted in the middle too, but in a more modern way. Anyway, Shindou obviously has bad taste in hair, so...yeah.”
Waya gave him a sheepish look.
Isumi gave Waya a...something look.
“I’ll take that into consideration,” Isumi said with absolutely no expression at all. Which was actually a lot of expression, if you thought about it.
“Ah, great. Anyway, I gotta go. Good seeing you again.” Waya waved goodbye, still sheepishly, and started walking away.
Isumi watched him go and thought, Yep, definitely need this trip to China.
But before that...well, he had come here for a haircut. And maybe Waya did have a point.
Isumi walked into the barber shop and asked Akemi-san to make him look fabulous.

Author’s note: This is my second third FOURTH Hikago fic I’ve written about hair. And the second fic I've written that makes fun of Isumi's post-pro exam angst and has him run off to China as the punch-line. I AM IN A RUT. But c'mon! Isumi's hair is terribad before he goes to China.
And then he inexplicably gets perfectly layered j-pop hair and he starts to look more and more like Raito from Death Note, who he inexplicably turns into in future unwritten chapters of the manga.
