SOME VERY PRACTICAL ADVICE
"The reading/grammar section is worth 50% of the points on the test. So, it's important you do well on this part. Many people run out of time because the section is so long. I found it helpful to do it this way:
Skip the reading questions and go directly to the grammar questions. Answer them as quickly as possible. If you don't know, just guess and move on. These questions are worth one point each. Finish all the grammar questions within 20 minutes. If you can't, just guess and move on.
Now return to the reading section. I found it helpful to do the reading section in reverse order. The reason is that the questions are arranged from longest reading to shortest reading, so if you go backwards, you can work your way up to the harder, longer passages. Each question here is worth 5 points-- 5x as much as the grammar questions-- so this is where you want to spend most of your time."

Oh, that's useful! I knew there was a point to me studying the kanji book for so long. I did find another site that lists the grammar points that are most commonly used on the test, but it seems to have disappeared. I hate it when that happens!

I think the book I'm using only covers the most common grammar points on the test, but I could be wrong. Anyway, it's kind of the no-brains-required 2-kyuu book. It has English translations, unlike a lot of the other books. It's called 日本語総まとめ問題集 if you want to check it out。I guess the 総まとめ means it covers everything, but someone told me it doesn't.

Huh, that Pera Pera person recommends the Pimsleur CDs... I've got all three levels (just finished them). Not bad at all!

Yeah, I think CDs are a good way to go. The person who replaced me on JET has been studying Japanese for two years just using CDs, and she's really good for someone who's never taken a class. When we watched Ponyon (the new Miyazaki movie) she understood most of the normal conversations. But not the magical stuff. No one understood the magical stuff.
