Behold, an upcoming Xbox 360 game starring Frederic Chopin!
Of course the soundtrack is going to feature Chopin's piano music, as performed by Russian Stanislav Bunin. And also compositions by Sakuraba Motoi!!!!!! I like Sakuraba Motoi. I would love to hear him do arrangements of Chopin pieces. I like Chopin too.
On a related note, I've never had the (dis)pleasure of being involved in a wanky fandom. In fact, the only fandom I've been strongly involved in is Hikago. And Hikago...well, let's look at Hikago.
It says a lot that this list is probably the wankiest Hikago thing anyone I know has done this year.

I read the entire Msscribe story yesterday. It seems like everyone on my flist is reading it. It is the frightening tale of how one woman's wank changed the HP fandom world!...for the worse. God, who has the time and energy to create and maintain several gazillion sycophantic/trollish sockpuppet LJs? And what does it say about us outsiders who enjoy reading about it? It's like reading the tabloids. Very good entertainment, very good schadenfreude.
On a related note, I've never had the (dis)pleasure of being involved in a wanky fandom. In fact, the only fandom I've been strongly involved in is Hikago. And Hikago...well, let's look at Hikago.
Ten Reasons You Don't See Much Hikaru no Go Wank;
Or, My Attempt to Create Some Wank Where There Is None
1. This fandom is small. So small the HP fandom could step on it and not even notice the squishy sound.
2. This fandom islazy laid-back. Flame wars would be too much effort.
3. We don't obsess completely and utterly over our One True Fandom. No one is batshit insane. No one has yet claimed to be channeling the spirit of Sai. In fact, most people in this fandom are interested in lots of different fandoms. And if a BNF dares write fic for another fandom, we're, like, totally cool with that.
4. Speaking of which, do we have BNFs? Maybe
issen4 and
svz_insanity, who probably have the largest fic output, and I guess
aishuu, though she writes in tons of fandoms and isn't primarily a Hikago writer. Geez, what is wrong with these guys? Too busy having real lives to create websites dedicated to their favourite pairings and to gather their allies and have secret cabal meetings? Too busy *gasp* actually writing fic?
5. Because we have our own lives, we're not close to each other. We don't go to cons with each other and IM and all that jazz (unless ur all leaving me out of the sekkrit fun WAH!!!!11). We can't actually hurt each other's feelings all that much.
6. Hikago is over. There is no new canon to wank over.
7. The canon was never very wankable in the first place. One of the great things about Hikago is that it is so clearly written and drawn that we pretty much can't argue about anything. We know who did what why when where how. I don't see any "oh Hikaru told Akira that he loved him just so that he couldhave sex play Go with him" "no your wrong he totally loves him he just doesn't express it well!!1!" "I hate you you should go play in traffic because you insulted me you meanie bum wah!!!~`!" type of canon discussion.
8. The manga and anime are almost exactly the same, so no manga vs. anime wars. Well, there is the matter of Hikaru's eye colour being different. That's a HUGE DEAL OMG. Now I don't know whether to describe his eyes as "glowing emeralds" or "stormy slates like we used to draw on in school."
9. No sub vs. dub wars. Everyone agrees the dub is bad. Heck, I've never even watched it and I agree it's bad.
10. The pairings? Not much to argue about. The most common ones are Hikaru/Akira, Isumi/Waya, and Ogata/Ashiwara. Occasionally you see Hikaru/Waya, or crack stuff like Ochi/anybody/everybody (this means YOU
shinra_lackey), but nobody gets ruffled feathers over ships.
11. It's a series about Go for crying out loud. Can you feel the excitement? Gen-fic ahoy!
12. (I really can't count, can I?) And finally, people in this fandom are really nice and not crazy. Maybe I'm just unaware of the pot of seething insane hatred roiling inside their blackened souls, but I doubt it. I luvs you guys. :)

Date: 2006-06-23 07:02 am (UTC)I only noticed it, because I was tempted to post to clairvoyant, either because, it was a kneejerk responce, I am evil, wanted to see who else liked the series there or was trying to corrupt people to pick it up. You pick.I do agree that it is a pretty laid back and fun fandom, but I wouldn't say that there is no wank what so ever.

Date: 2006-06-24 03:26 am (UTC)Dude, you should have totally corrupted people into picking up the series.I had no idea there were so man f_w communities and that people paid so much attention. Big Brother is watching jooz, huh?

Date: 2006-07-27 08:49 am (UTC)awesome. And now I'm also curious about how one attains BNF-dom; my lack of knowledge means that I don't even understand your reference to sockpuppets. D:no subject
Date: 2006-07-27 06:02 pm (UTC)sucksockpuppet was (or a BNF for that matter) until recently too. From what I gather, sockpuppets are fake identities created to prop up your "real" identity. Msscribe posted her fics and such in her real LJ, but she also controlled a bunch of sockpuppet LJs that she used to praise her fics, build websites in her honour, etc. She also often created evil sockpuppets who would attack her and her friends (mainly for writing slash) so that she/they could play the innocent victim and have fun flaming the evil sockpuppet back. Sometimes she even claimed she was being stalked in RL by those same evil sockpuppets. In general, she loved stirring up controversy and being at the center of attention. That is apparently how to attain BNF-dom, not good fic-writing, according to what I've read. What was so remarkable about Msscribe was that sockpuppeteered for years and managed to gain a place in the "inner circle" of HP-fandom (yeah, I didn't know such a thing existed either). She also hurt a lot of people and made a lot of enemies. It's fascinatingly evil.

lazylaid-back. Flame wars would be too much effort. We are lazy. I've looked at really popular communities like
4. Speaking of which, do we have BNFs?
Dude, BNFs. Everyone in Hikago is a BNF to me. We don't have enough authors to say differently. Lol, I'd make a sockpuppet journal to flame everyone if you wanted some wank, but see #2 about the laziness. ^^
5. Because we have our own lives, we're not close to each other.
I don't think anyone I know in the Hikago livejournal fandom knows each other in real life. You kind of get the vibe when certain people know each other in other fandoms, but I haven't really felt like that in Hikago. I think the only people who talk like they know each other is marks and mousapelli, and they're in a lot of other fandoms besides HnG.
10. The pairings? Not much to argue about.
Oh yeah? Where's the Touya Koyou/Sai love, huh? I demand that my pairing is the Hikago OTP and that everyone has to write it. Who cares about the rest of them when it's so obvious?
Ochi/anybody/everybody
Yes, I take credit for promoting the crack, but YOU write Ochi/himself, which is just traumatizing.
12. (I really can't count, can I?) And finally, people in this fandom are really nice and not crazy. Maybe I'm just unaware of the pot of seething insane hatred roiling inside their blackened souls, but I doubt it. I luvs you guys. :)
You may not know this, but
everyone calls you a bitch behind your backwe all love ya too. ^^God, I feel weird for even typing 'bitch'. I am such a wimpBack to the issue of wank, I think Western series (books/tv/movies) make it so there are a lot of interpretations on purpose, too. While an anime may have multiple pairings available, like Ranma 1/2, there's usually an OTP that's heavily pushed by the creators. HP on the other hands doesn't want to seem like a romance, so while there are hints, JKR won't tell you straight out who will be with who. So people fight.
If JKR would stop being a prude and just pop everyone's cherries, we wouldn't need to have to speculate.
*end craziness*
no subject
Date: 2006-06-24 05:53 am (UTC)You think your OTP gets ignored? What about mine, huh? What about my dear Brad/Kid?! They get nothing! Nothing! Not a single thing, even from me!
Yes, I take credit for promoting the crack, but YOU write Ochi/himself, which is just traumatizing.
I'm not the one who comes up with Ochi porn scenarios. You sicko.
I think Western series (books/tv/movies) make it so there are a lot of interpretations on purpose, too. While an anime may have multiple pairings available, like Ranma 1/2, there's usually an OTP that's heavily pushed by the creators.
I mostly agree with you--relationships in anime seem to be more unilateral than multilateral. Though I'd like to point out that for some series, the OTP that the creator pushes on us can be the most reviled pairing of them all--like Heero/Relena in Gundam Wing. But maybe that's the specialty wank of yaoi fandom.
Funny you should bring up Ranma 1/2, seeing as how there was a TON of wank in that fandom before the word was ever invented. Same goes for Sailor Moon. I don't lurk in those fandoms anymore, so I don't know what the current status is, but I'm pretty sure the wank has died down a lot. Ranma 1/2's open-endedness certainly contributes to its wank factor though.
I dunno, maybe the current generation of anime fans is just not as combative compared to the '90s. Our attention is split between a lot more series now. We're not very often arguing about what's going to happen in the next episode, we're downloading and watching it. Maybe with the uber-popular ongoing series like Naruto there's a lot of wank happening, but I don't know about it.
Or maybe Usagi Kou is sucking up all the wank and depriving the rest of us.
There's also the possibility that wank communities are more likely to be monitoring Western fandoms. I'm not familiar enough with those coms to be sure. And the demographic makeup of LJ might have to do with it too. I think LJ is dominated by Westerners, while other journal services are more popular in other parts of the world?
If JKR would stop being a prude and just pop everyone's cherries, we wouldn't need to have to speculate.
Yeah, whadda bitch.
I feel weird typing 'bitch' too, sadly.no subject

Date: 2006-06-26 03:57 am (UTC)I would disagree slightly about the wanklessness of Hikago. There were a couple of interesting times on Hikago Yaoi (http://hikagoyaoi.org/forum/) a couple of years ago. Nothing really momentus, but there was one fan who scared me and I'm notoriously difficult to really shake (irritate, yes... shake, no).
You're also looking at Hikago "a few years later." There were a couple of other players back toward the beginning of the fandom - they have long since wandered off. I suppose Stacy, Luce and I qualify as "BNFs" since we're the most prolific and we've kept our hand in. I'd say
Hikago also was in its prime back during the fandom transition to LJ - it was based mostly off ML and message boards. I know LadySeishou and Nawlins7 were both heavy on the one I frequented.
Also, I need to give you access to my email records if you don't believe people don't get upset when I "wander" from Hikago. There is batshit out there. I've seen it!
Still, the fandom, as a whole, is remarkably well behaved. I attribute that to the essential intellectualism of the series (face it, Go is for nerds), and the fact that it still hasn't really caught on. I hear Toonami Jetstream's picked it up, and I weep. July 17 - wait for it!
no subject
Date: 2006-06-27 06:44 pm (UTC)I'm kind of looking forward to Hikago becoming more popular, even if it means more bad behaviour (not to mention badfic) in the fandom. Plus it would be so cool to see kids playing Go rather than Pokemon, though I doubt we'll see a huge swell or anything.
no subject
Date: 2006-06-27 07:58 pm (UTC)I think I've produced over 100 Tenipuri works, so I can see why you'd say that. I think it's a case of fewer fish in the Hikago pond - those that ARE in the fandom know I'm there. Not everyone knows I'm in Tenipuri.
I think fandoms tend to quiet down after the initial hit. It's when the "waves" of new fans enter that issues arise again.
Of course, HP is an exception since it's just. too. big. to ever fully see.
I doubt we'll see kids playing go. Not flashy enough.

Date: 2006-06-27 09:55 pm (UTC)Boy does that make me happy! *fangirls*
I think fandoms tend to quiet down after the initial hit. It's when the "waves" of new fans enter that issues arise again.
Kind of like the old-timer Go players getting all worked up because the young turks started going after their titles, heh. But what's kind of strange is that when Hikago got licensed it didn't seem to cause much of a new wave. Or maybe it did and I just missed it. Maybe Toonami Jetstream will have a bigger impact.
I doubt we'll see kids playing go. Not flashy enough.
My younger brother started playing Go after reading HnG, and he even found some people to play with at school. And my cousin's kids, who are seven and eight years old, kept asking questions about the game when they saw me and my brother playing. So I think there'll be a few. You won't see Hikaru and Sai painted on any airplanes, but any little bit is nice.

Date: 2006-06-28 02:54 am (UTC)I guess it's because the quality of the work was actually better in Hikago than most fandoms ... it's hard to just single out one writer or so to go "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVAH MUST LOSE MY NUT OVER HIM/HER OMG!"
XD I always hear about Bright Burning though. ^_^
But how does one measure BNF-dom anyway? Though to be honest, after reading all that mess on Fandomwank and all ... dude ... 0_o. How would one measure popularity in the Hikago fen anyways? We don't fight/wank ... but it's not like we all gather in a specific place or anything to do so. XD I guess Hikagoyaoi might count, but I don't think that the majority of the fandom knows about it anymore.
Sincerely, it kinda feels weird to look back and know that wow, I have been in this fandom for quite awhile. 0_o. But I don't feel like I know much of its history strangely enough. (The fact that I wonder what makes Hikago Fandom History ... huh. Like, I know a lot of fandoms have a fandom timeline ... who came in, who wrote/drew what so on and so forth ... but I couldn't tell you what happened in Hikago Fandom.)
I know most people in the fandom either through my Flist or by their names on their stories. There really isn't a lot of interaction otherwise.
Good grapes, you actually got hate mail for writing something besides HIkago?! Dang. I'm glad I'm not a BNF for sure ... that's kinda scary.
I had a point to this, but I forgot it somewhere. But ^_^ I had fun reading the post, Flonnebonne. And it has been a bit of a meta-eye-opener. I knew there were many reasons I was fond of this fandom . . .

Date: 2006-06-28 07:04 am (UTC)Seriously, your fic gets mentioned fairly often. Especially ITFOTN, despite it being all over and done with. Because, like, quality is remembered. And there are just not that many longfics in this fandom.
I kind of totally missed the boat on Hikagoyaoi, having entered the fandom just last year. I'm a nub. When I first started checking out the fandom I did look around that site, but somehow it didn't capture my interest.
Maybe because all the cool people had migrated to LJ. Maybe because I'm mostly interested in genfics--or rather, with fics that engage with the ideas in Hikago and the things that make it unique (like, you know, Go), rather than romance per se. I was seeing more of the kind of fic I wanted on LJ, so here I am.It's funny how fandoms seem to have a life of their own, isn't it? And the fact that people can (and want to) chronicle that life. If I had to characterize the Hikago fandom, I'd probably say it's Canada. Not that I'm biased or anything.
Glad you enjoyed the meta post. :)

Date: 2006-07-02 03:41 am (UTC)Hehehe, well, I'd be lying if I said I didn't know that a few people liked the really long story, but to be honest, I don't think that there really is much of a BNF-sort of trend in the Hikago fandom, as you had mentioned before. And yeah, that's probably because the Hikago fen is like Canada. Though Canada has better hockey, I think. XD
Compared to fandoms like Naruto or Harry Potter, there really isn't a lot of fic ... I think it's the percentage of good fic that make people sit up and go "wow!" And it's hard to just pick out a handful that stand above the rest ... since everything just shines so brilliantly. XD Maybe that's also why we don't have BNFs ... we just have too many good writers. *nods* And I think we also have seasoned writers ... in that Hikago isn't their first fandom. This isn't the first time they've ever written fanfic (Hikago wasn't my first, at any rate). Since it was only availble subbed for so long, we didn't get a lot of younger fans until much later.
Like AIshuu mentioned, I'm curious as to how Hikago fen might change when it becomes more availible on the net (and in English! XD).
I don't think it'll impact too badly, since it won't be broadcasted on Television or anything. And since the fen is rather scattered, it's not easy to start flamewars. XD
