Thank you! I thought no one was going to read my long, rambly, personal meta, so I'm really glad you found it interesting!

I think it really depends on the school, just like anywhere. The school I worked at seemed to have quite a few spectators, including parents, at least at the track events. But then, we had a somewhat famous track coach at our school, and he sometimes took kids to Nationals, so maybe that's what it was. I think hardly anyone went to our volleyball matches because our teams weren't particularly good :)

Anyway, sports anime don't really have to reflect real life--the kids can all do Olympic/pro level/magic moves, so it's all about what the mangaka/animation companies want to focus on more than anything XD

It seems like there are quite a few older brother figures out there...I've seen them in Ace of Diamond and Knight in the Area and probably others too. But they're usually sporty role models, not parental. I will add Whistle to my (long) list of sports anime to watch!
