New Wings

Kogure watched, half-hopeful and half-nostalgic (already nostalgic, was he?), as Miyagi (newly christened captain of Shohoku) dribbled once, twice, slow and patient as you please, eyes forward, aware of every man on the court, while Mitsui hunkered down and put up his defense, body squared and arms spread wide (he was still making up for lost time, even after time had run out), waiting for Miyagi’s attack, which would be fast and explosive and unpredictable, everything that made Shohoku Shohoku.

Kogure wasn’t sure who he wanted to win this first scrimmage--Miyagi, who needed to show his worth to his fledgling team, or Mitsui, who represented the old guard, and who Kogure had always cheered for out of admiration and comraderie and because Mitsui needed it. But Kogure knew that things were changing now, Shohoku was changing, and Kogure always wanted what was best for Shohoku even now that he was no longer part of the team; he wanted Miyagi to win this one.

He wanted to see Miyagi fly.

There was no time to think or analyze when Miyagi made his move. One second he was languidly dribbling, eyes half-lidded--the next he was exploding forward, faking a pass to Yasuda as he tore up the center, using the bigger and heavier Kakuta like a screen (never mind that Kakuta was on the opposite team) to cut off Mitsui so he could carry the ball in a wide-legged leap up to the net. One sweet finger-roll later and it was two-oh for Miyagi’s team.

Kogure saw Haruko give a gasp of surprise and Ayako’s mouth split into a wide grin. He saw Miyagi say something cheeky enough to make Mitsui grunt with irritation. He saw Yasuda clap Miyagi on the back, Shiozaki ruffle Miyagi's fluffy hair. And Kogure felt, more than saw, Akagi at his side raise his head up slightly in approval--high praise from the old guard to the new.

Kogure, watching from afar, smiled and let his fledglings fly.
