1. Hikaru no Go
Ah ha ha, how surprising. There are lots of reasons to love Hikago, but the thing that really clinched it for me was the *BIG SPOILER.* I cried my eyes out. I always cry my eyes out when I read stories about children growing up in a hard way. I call it Peter Pan syndrome. Oh Hikaru.
2. Rurouni Kenshin
This was the series that taught me that anime could be more than just entertainment. It could be educational too! Now I know about the Shinsengumi (and since I currently live near Aizu, that's a good thing). But seriously, this was the first series I watched that had any strong character development or moral complexity or interesting plot development. And damn, those were some cool fight scenes.
When I watch it now, I see that there's a lot of speechifying in this series, and the fights tend to drag on a bit...but it's still full of tasty goodness (Sannoooooooo!!!) and it's held up well over time. I just wish I had a good copy of the old fansubs, because the official translation sucks ass.
3. Slam Dunk
MITSUI!!!! SAKURAGI!!!! RUKAWA!!!! GORI!!!! SENDOH!!! MAKI!!! EVERYONE!!!! Like Prince of Tennis, there are a zillion characters from a zillion schools in SD, but unlike Prince of Tennis they all manage to be sympathetic and not retarded apes from planet crazy land. They're so in love with their sport, it's easy to get caught up in their BASKETBALL=EVERYTHING universe.
The games are incredibly thrilling. I hated waiting for the next scanlation to come out so I could find out who won. And the humour in this series! It's probably the funniest manga I've read, at least in the laugh-out-loud kind of way. Ranma comes close, but it's funny in a weirder way.
4. Ranma 1/2
Ah, nostalgia. The first anime I watched that I realized was actually anime. I guess it took a bunch of sex/species-changing psychotic martial artists to clue me in (I was young, okay?). It was just so...completely and unapologetically weird to me at the time. Ranma turns into a girl? Okay! Ryouga has no sense of direction? Sure thing! Kodachi practices rhythmic gymnastics martial arts? Makes sense! Totally classic. Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to have been too popular over here in Japan, however...even my middle-aged students (one of whom watches anime regularly) have barely heard of it.
5. Death Note
Ignoring its downward spiral into ignoble suckiness, Death Note is absolutely amazing. The plot is so engrossing that it doesn't even matter that I don't care for the characters (I like them, I just don't feel for them emotionally). And the implications of the story are just chilling. For once, a series that does social commentary in a way that doesn't bore me to death! Yay!
6. Yakitate! Japan
CRACK. That's all I have to say about that.
7. Slayers
A great deal of my love for Slayers has to do with the experience of waiting avidly for the next commercial volume to be released and hoping my mom would give me a wad of cash to buy it (spoiled!), then taking it home and unwrapping it gleefully so I could watch it over and over with my little bro. The dragon fishing episode will forever be burned into my memory. The rest of my love for Slayers mainly has to do with Zelgadis. :) Oh, and Lina's wanton destruction of everything. I can never get enough wanton destruction.
8. Hunter x Hunter
The Hunter Exam is my favourite part--it's so fun and fast-paced and clever. Very easy to get caught up in. The Spider's Arc is cool too, if unconventional. Kurapika rocks my house! He's so smart! And he has Fuji's voice! I want to be just like him when I grow up, but less girly. I also love Leorio and Killua tons, though Gon bores me.
9. Prince of Tennis
I'm putting this low on the list because I think this series isn't going to hold up well over time for me. It's admittedly a pretty terrible series in most ways, but it's still a lot of fun. DUNKU SMASHU!! Momo is my favourite, but I like pretty much all of the Seigaku regulars. There are tons of annoying characters too, though, and boring arcs. Still, it's helluva entertaining, and occasionally it's even moving. Doesn't hold a candle to Slam Dunk though.
10. Azumanga Daioh
The anime is a bit too slow for my tastes, but the 4-koma manga is absolutely hysterical. Tomo is my girlfriend, Osaka is my pet goldfish, Chiyo is that really smart girl in one of my kindergarten classes, and Ms. Yukari is me, or so I wish.
