500 words a day or I pay

How I force myself to write now: I gave my brother $5, and if I don't write an average of 500 words per day this month, he gets to keep the cashola. (Actually, it's only $2 for January, since we started in the middle of the month, but it'll be $5 next month.)

My brother is totally okay with "helping out" in this way. In fact it was his suggestion.

I am enough of a cheapskate that this is actually working.

The only problem is that I'm revising my first nano draft now, and how do you do word counts for revision? It will lead to cheating the system!

Revision should be excluded. Really. Word counts really only count when drafting/writing!

Do you use MS word? You could use the track changes feature to work out what is *new* words, and then word count that? :3

B-but these are major revisions! Changing character personalities and gender and the whole premise of the story! I can't really write any more without doing these revisions first.

I'm using Scrivener! That would be a fantastic idea if I were using Word though.

Another way is to maybe say for every 1000 words revised, is worth 100 words?

Hm, that's an idea! Thank you! I think I'll do that once I've hammered out some of the basic plot and character stuff I'm working on right now. It's really important I get these foundational things right, or else I'll end up writing a lot of wasted words later.
