FINALLY posting a reply. On DW as I keep meaning to do more on this site and never do.

I should note right off I never got around to watching Slam Dunk. I feel like one of the 3 people who hasn't, heh. (The comparisons to HQ intrigue me) But by now I've seen a lot of other series: hikago, knb, pot, yowapeda, haikyuu, princess 9, oofuri, daiya no ace, free and yuuri on ice of course. I read the e21 manga but never got around to the anime. (I LOVE the artist for that manga and liked it but it has an awkward racist storyline that makes me not want to engage with the series.) I tend to watch sports anime because it's way more fun when it moves and I am a huge sucker for good animation. Though a most series really slack on the animation front. Other than eyeshield the only ones I've gone into the manga are hikago, haikyuu, and oofuri

I love this meta as I'd been pondering sports anime recently, though I mostly thought in "depth of feels" terms. Most of the super long Magical Boys series felt like they fell into "super ridiculous with meh animation and mediocre feels." They'd dig into motivations and relationships but not with any satisfying depth. I know who everyone is but not with much complexity. KnB, Daiya, PoT, YowaPeda are all this. Even when shit gets emotional it's so melodramatic all the time I mostly find it funny rather than feelsy. (looking at you, KnB)

Shorter ones seemed to have better animation and give more time to the characters. In KnB/PoT/Daiya I know the basics of everyone but they're so big and so ridiculous I never really connect. Whereas at the other end Oofuri is basically one big long relationship study. Well more the manga than the anime since the anime is pretty short. HQ, Free, and YOI feel like they fit into this mold. And as a bonus all those have better animation. I have trouble watching any other sports anime after Haikyuu because it totally spoils me on slick animation.

HnG is the exception to everything. You've made me curious about Chihayafuru so I'll have to check that out.

Framing it as sports/life with life intrusion moments is making me consider sports series in new ways. now I want to think up all the "life intrusion" moments and categorize them.

THIS WAS SUPER RAMBLY and unfocused but hey it's fun to actually discuss shit again.

Most amusing sports anime trope: a slowly growing peanut gallery of defeated rivals etc that explain shit. One or two I could take but when there's like 8+ people from multiple teams in the stands chipping in I just laugh.
