Unusually, perhaps, the lack of parents at sports events in manga never bothers me - spectators were never really expected to come to any sports matches at my school or even uni (weren't even invited, most of the time). From films, I understand that's not the case in the US!
The parents in sports stories do seem to have an extreme case of parents in kids books - ie dead, missing or bad guys. There are a few older siblings who do parental type stuff, like Sho's older brother in Whistle. It's been a while since I read it, but there are various little snippets of parents in Whistle, handled quite nicely.
